About Hermosa Beach Hermosa Beach, Ca is a city located within Los Angeles County, California. Situated in the South Bay region of the greater Los Angeles area, it is one of three beach cities in the county. Hermosa Beach is actually a narrow city, covering about 15 blocks from east to west, and about 40 blocks from north to south. The city is divided by the Pacific Coast Highway. To the north of Hermosa Beach is Manhattan Beach, and to the south and east is Redondo Beach. In 2006, Hermosa Beach was estimated to have 18,566 year-round residents. Hermosa Beach is known for its flat sandy beach and as a popular place for sunbathers, beach volley ball, and paddleboarding. In fact, it's known as the Beach Volleyball capital of the world. In its early days, Hermosa Beach, which had been a part of the Rancho San Pedro Spanish Land grant, was a parcel of land featuring rolling fields of grain. During certain seasons, large herds of sheep would be allowed to graze those fields. But as with most of the area, as people began arriving to make the area their home, the land was parceled off. The first official survey took place in 1901 for a boardwalk, and the first wooden pier was completed in 1904. That pier was washed away in 1913 and replaced by a concrete one. The Strand is a paved path that runs along Hermosa Beach for about twenty miles running between Santa Monica and Redondo Beach. The Hermosa Beach pier is the community's main shopping and eating area, and it's where lots of partying takes place. Typically, this path serves thousands of people on foot or on bicycles, skateboards, or rollerblades - people just out enjoying the sun and the surf. The wonderful southern California climate is prevalent here with average temperatures ranging in the 70s in the summer and in the in the mid-50s in the winter. The gentle westerly sea breezes account for the more moderate temperatures that are found here. These breezes are also responsible for helping to keep the area smog-free as well. Hermosa Beach Schools Hermosa Beach has its own elementary and middle school, which are in the Hermosa Beach City School District. High school students attend classes at either Manhattan Beach or Redondo Beach. The Hermosa View school (grades K-2) and Hermosa Valley school (grades 3-8) were honored to be included in a group of less than 300 schools nationally recognized as US Department of Education National Blue Ribbon schools.
