In the 1800’s, during what is referred to as the Rancho Era, Lawndale gained its first non-native residents with the land granted to Antonio Avila before the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo made this area of California part of the United States.
It was not until the early 1900’s real estate boom that this area and those nearby began to develop into the small independent communities they have become today. With the arrival of the railroad to this and other areas, the ensuing growth encouraged more modern conveniences and more people to move to the area and begin investing in real estate. The real draw to the city of Lawndale and its primary reason for incorporation was to maintain low tax levels for everyone to benefit which it continues to do today.
