About Manhattan Beach

Manhattan Beach, CA is one of three beach towns located in Los Angeles County, California.  The town is about 19 miles southwest of Los Angeles, with a population of 33,852 as of 2000.

In 1863, the land once known as Rancho Sausal Redondo and Rancho Aguaje de la Centinela was purchased by Sir Robert Burnett for $33,000.  After ten years, he returned to Scotland and leased the land to a Canadian, Daniel Freeman.  Freeman turned a once thriving ranch into fields and grew several crops.  In 1885, Freeman purchased the land from Burnett for $140,000. At one time, George H. Peck owned a portion of the land that has become part of the northern section Manhattan Beach.

Two of the favorite pastimes here include beach volleyball and surfing.  The waves during winter can reach 9 to 12 feet in height.

The Manhattan Beach Open is known as the "Wimbledon of Beach Volleyball".  Winners of this tournament receive an award of a bronze plaque on the Pier's "Beach Volleyball Walk of Fame". In addition to the 2.1 miles of ocean frontage and 40 acres of recreational beach, there are 10 parks and a municipal golf course.

The downtown area features many fine restaurants and a mixed-use center which includes a boutique, hotel, and various other shops.  The library, which is part of the Los Angeles County Public Library System, offers Internet accessible computers as well as WiFi.

The Mediterranean-type climate provides plenty of sunshine throughout the year, making the South Bay a sought after location to live and play.
